Driesell is our new Basketball Coach!

April 27, 2010

CHUCK DRIESELL will be named the new head coach of our Bulldogs at a 4 p.m. press conference. Coach Driesell was an Assistant Coach at Maryland for the last four years, is 46 years old and married with two kids. As I told you yesterday, he is the son of the legendary Lefty Driesell and  does have a military background having served as an officer in the United States Navy and as an assistant coach at the ‘Naval Prep School’ at the U.S. Naval Academy.
You can listen to the press conference on Bulldog Insider at www.CitadelSports.com.   It will also be broadcast live by ESPN 910 radio in Charleston and will probably be on their stream   www.910theteam.net   You can read more about our new coach at  http://www.postandcourier.com/news/2010/apr/27/driesell-to-be-named-new-bulldogs-coach/

Kinda looks like Lefty doesn’t he?

Andre goes to Arizona!

April 26, 2010

The Arizona Cardinals drafted Citadel wide receiver & Romeo Company Alum Andre Roberts in the 3rd round.  The Cards envision Andre returning punts and being a slot receiver their offensive scheme.  They also expect him to be the number four receiver & the first wide out off the bench. Word has it that with experience, he may play on the outside  and rumor has it his jersey number will change from #5 to #12.   Andre, who completed his coursework in December, will walk the stage on May 8th to receive  his Business degree which will come in handy considering 3rd rounders make up to $700,000 a year in guaranteed money.   Andre was drafted several slots ahead of App State QB Armante Edwards who went to the Carolina Panthers as a WR  and they were the only SoCon players drafted this year.  Andre will join former Citadel running back Nemo Broughton ‘05, who signed as a free agent with Arizona. It just so happens that Arizona head coach Ken Whisenhunt’s father is a 1950 graduate of The Citadel so he is very familiar with our school and FYI, the Saturday our Bulldogs play the University of Arizona, the Cards play in St. Louis so you can’t see the Dogs and Andre in the same weekend.

On the basketball side, we still don’t have a coach but I am told we may have one by mid-week. For those of you who haven’t heard, Coach Conroy and his staff are now at Tulane. Coach Conroy more than doubled his salary with the move so it is hard to blame him for leaving.   I have heard that Chuck Driesell, son of coaching legend Lefty Driesell, is one of our top candidates, as is John Krikorian the head coach at  the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.  I wish there was more information but the few people who know what’s going on are not talking.  I guess talking about a coaching search would be akin to an Honor Code violation.  At this point I would not bet on who will be the next Bulldog basketball coach and it maybe someone other that Driesell or Krikorain!

Finally, the baseball team took two out of three from Davidson over the weekend and continues to perform well in the SoCon, in fact we lead the SoCon at this point. They must win on the road to cinch the regular season title but there is no guarantee we will make the NCAA baseball tourney unless we win the Socon Tourney, which will be held in Charleston at “The Joe”.  Things look good but baseball is a funny game…….
I’ll post the 2010 football schedule shortly.

Have a great week!
