Mike Houston is our new football coach

The Citadel’s new Head Football Coach is Mike Houston. Coach Houston was in Charleston on Monday to meet with The Citadel’s search committee and administration, and informed his Lenoir-Rhyne staff of the move to El Cid Tuesday. Reached by the Hickory (N.C.) Daily Record on Tuesday, Houston confirmed that he has resigned from Lenoir-Rhyne.

Houston, 42, just finished his third season as head coach at Division II Lenoir-Rhyne, leading the Bears to a 13-2 record and an appearance in the national championship game. Lenoir-Rhyne is in Hickory, N.C. The 1994 Mars Hill graduate has been named South Atlantic Conference coach of the year twice, and owns a record of 29-8 in three seasons at Lenoir-Rhyne. He was defensive coordinator at Lenoir-Rhyne for four years and also coached on the college level at Brevard.

The news should be announced with a press conference either today or tomorrow as Houston is attempting to inform his staff and former players of the change.

Houston’s comments on leaving Lenoir-Rhyne: “I have been blessed with fantastic assistant coaches and players, and have been very blessed to have a great group of alumni. Our family has been very fortunate. … We’ve been in Hickory for seven years, and both our sons were born here. “This has not been an easy decision by any means. Lenoir-Rhyne is just a very, very special place.”
