CAA Passes Corps on Home side resolution

The movement among Citadel fans and alumni to move the military school’s Corps of Cadets back to the home side of Johnson Hagood Stadium gained momentum over the weekend.

The Citadel Alumni Association’s Board of Directors passed a resolution supporting “the current and ongoing action of Lt. Gen. John Rosa … to relocate the South Carolina Corps of Cadets to the home (West) side of Johnson Hagood Stadium.” Mike Rogers, executive director of the Alumni Association said the resolution was passed “unanimously” and called the move “kind of a no-brainer.” There are logistical issues to work out, he said. Costs associated with the move could total as much as $200,000.

The campaign to move the Corps back to the home side picked up steam after new football coach Mike Houston was hired last month. Citadel fans began flooding officials with emails and messages supporting the move. The cadets have been seated on the visitors side since the renovated Johnson Hagood Stadium opened in 2008. “Any time you have a large number of alumni voicing concern over something, you have to take a look at it and investigate it,” said Glenn Addison, chairman of the athletics committee of the Board of Visitors. “It will be discussed and the people that need to will look into it. It will be looked at and given a lot of attention to see if it’s feasible, and to see if it’s the right thing to do and doesn’t impact the other things we’ve done.”

In addition, Southern Conferences rules suggest that the home side is the more appropriate place for the Corps. “Moving all students and official groups from the visiting side to the home side would absolutely meet the spirit of the rules,” said the SoCon’s senior associate commissioner, Geoff Cabe.
Here is the wording of the Alumni Association’s resolution:
