After a lot of shuffling of positions during preseason practice, The Citadel’s offensive linemen are beginning to find their places, coach Mike Houston said Thursday. “It’s been pretty steady the last couple of days,” Houston said. “So I think it’s starting to steady itself a little bit.” The Bulldogs lost four starters from last year’s 5-7 team, leaving a lot of positions up for grabs this season. The unit that has started to form the last few days includes senior Victor Hill and redshirt freshman Isaiah Pinson at the tackles, sophomore Kyle Weaver and junior Sam Frye at the guards and sophomore Ryan Bednar at center. Harrison Davis, a 6-2, 255-pound sophomore who had been working at center, is now playing tackle.

“We’re starting to get some consistency with that lineup,” Houston said.

Not only are Citadel practices faster this season than in past years, they are louder as well. Music often blares from a speaker on the sideline, the playlist – heavy on rap, metal and classic rock, as you might expect – monitored by strength coach Donnell Boucher.
“It brings some energy to the practice field,” Houston said. “You get to the second week of camp, the dog days of preseason camp, it can get pretty grueling, and it does bring some energy to practice. The other thing it does is make our kids be loud with their communication signals, almost signaling the crowd noise on game day. So it makes them talk to each other better and communicate better.

“Donnell throws me a bone every now and then with an 80’s song, but I leave it up to him. The only thing I ask is, no profanity.” Thursday’s rotation included Styx, Quiet Riot and “Final Countdown” by Europe. Junior linebacker Carson Smith did not practice Thursday after tweaking his ankle, but should return to action Friday, Houston said … Defensive lineman Jake Smith, a redshirt freshman from Greenville, has left the team, Houston said.

The Bulldogs will hold their first major scrimmage of the preseason Saturday morning at Johnson Hagood Stadium … Media day and the Meet the Bulldogs event is set to begin at 11 a.m. Sunday at the stadium,
