CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel Director of Athletics Jim Senter announced on Monday that Duggar Baucom has been named as the 30th head coach in men’s basketball history. Baucom comes to The Citadel after a successful 10-year stint at VMI. “This is an exciting day for Citadel basketball,” said Senter. “Duggar has a proven track record of success, not only on the court, but more importantly in building young men of character off the court.”

Baucom amassed a 151-159 record with the Keydets and has a mark of 187-178 overall including two seasons as the head coach at Tusculum. The Charlotte graduate leaves VMI as the school’s all-time leader in wins and his 10 years represent the third-longest coaching tenure in Keydet history. Baucom is one of two VMI head basketball coaches to post two 20-win seasons and led the Keydets to the Big South Tournament championship game three times.

The 2008-09 team won 24 games, the second most in school history trailing only the 1976-77 team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s “Sweet 16.” VMI’s second-place finish in the Big South that season was easily its best since joining the circuit in 2003-04. In 2013-14, VMI advanced to the semifinals of the Tournament, which was the first postseason appearance in 37 years.

The Keydets led the NCAA in scoring for five straight years, and VMI had the nation’s leading scorer donning their uniform for two of those seasons.

Will Coach Baucom win at El Cid, like he did at VMI?

“Establishing a distinct style of play that everyone in Division I is aware of is incredibly difficult. To have the audacity to do it at a place where it makes the least amount of sense, completely speaks to the courage of Coach Baucom. The Citadel hit a home run hiring Duggar, but more importantly, they hit a grand slam in who Duggar is as a person. Count me as the newest diehard fan of the Bulldogs!”
-Buzz Williams, head coach Virginia Tech-

“Duggar is a tremendous coach who plays a highly entertaining style. The pace and tempo with which they play is very hard to prepare for. He is a wonderful guy and a true innovator in a sport.”

I’d pay to see a Duggar Baucom coached team. They are fun to watch, play hard and show class and sportsmanship. The Citadel made a tremendous hire and they got a great man and one of the true creative minds in college hoops. The Citadel will be in the NCAA tournament soon. I love this hire!”
