New Citadel basketball coach Duggar Baucom named his assistant coaches Wednesday, hiring two VMI assistants and a former VMI player. Daniel Willis and Ryan Mattocks, who worked for Baucom at Virginia Military Institute, and former Keydet player Willie Bell will fill out Baucom’s first staff at The Citadel. “All are extremely loyal, dedicated coaches whose main focus is to help our cadet-athletes be successful,” said Baucom, who was hired to replace Chuck Driesell last month.

Willis, who spent the last 10 seasons on Baucom’s VMI staff, will serve as associate head coach. In his first season at VMI, Willis filled in for Baucom in 2005-06 when the head coach was sidelined for seven games. He also worked for Baucom at Tusculum, and was an assistant coach with Baucom at Western Carolina. Willis was an All-America guard at Lenoir-Rhyne. “Daniel has been an invaluable asset, as we have rebuilt two programs together and now will start a third,” Baucom said. “He was a great college player who now provides keen insight in the flow of the game and at practice. Daniel does an excellent job in game preparation, and is totally invested in all areas of our program. He is going to make an outstanding head coach in the near future.”

Mattocks, a Duke graduate and former student-manager for the Blue Devils, spent the last three seasons at VMI with Baucom, and will serve as the Bulldogs’ recruiting coordinator. “Ryan has been a key member of my staff for the last three years and will continue to do so as our recruiting coordinator at The Citadel,” Baucom said. “He is highly organized, a great communicator and has a tireless work ethic which makes him a great recruiter. Ryan will play a vital role in developing our current players as well as bringing in talented future Bulldogs.”

Bell, most recently the head coach at Warwick High School in Virginia, was team captain of Baucom’s 2008-09 VMI team that went 24-8 and beat Kentucky at Rupp Arena. He also has coached on the AAU circuit and at Louisiana-Monroe. “Willie was in my first signing class at VMI and from the first practice I knew he was going to be a great coach in the future,” said Baucom. “He brings tremendous passion and energy in everything that he does. Willie is a natural leader who expects excellence from himself as well as others he is around. He brings a unique perspective to our staff, having experienced the military academic setting firsthand. I am thrilled he is joining our staff.”

Driesell hired
Former Citadel basketball coach Chuck Driesell has accepted an assistant coaching position at San Jose State, according to reports. Driesell was hired by San Jose State coach Dave Wojcik, brother of former College of Charleston coach Doug Wojcik, a close friend of Driesell’s.
San Jose State was 2-28 last season and is 1-35 in the Mountain West Conference in two seasons under Dave Wojcik.

Wright takes visit
Former Citadel basketball player Jake Wright has taken an official visit to South Alabama, and also is considering New Hampshire, Miami (Ohio) and Utah Valley, according to reports. Wright, a 6-4 guard, decided to transfer from The Citadel after averaging 8.9 points and shooting 42.1 percent from 3-point range last season as a freshman
